Cryptid Anthem

Wait! Did you hear that? No, neither did I

It’s awfully quiet ‘neath this starry sky

Dark like a cave or a terrible lair

Strewn with bones gnawed by a ravenous bear

Quick! Pile more wood upon that puny fire

Raise a blaze to make a devil admire

I see your cheery faces and the trees

Beyond the blackness puts me not at ease

All the creeping crawling scratching stalking

Claws raking forest floor twigs, and sneaking

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Take another drink but don’t overflow

For gluttony draws in the Windego

Skin draped skeleton walking drawn and gaunt

Preceded by putrescent airs that haunt

For your flesh it craves and smells out the worst

The covetous, greedy, gorging are cursed

Listen, its antlers they brush on the trees

And its groan can be heard rattling the breeze

Through its rotten teeth it moans more more more

Hand me that whiskey or you’ll be done for!

Snap! Crack! Boom!

May this not be our tomb, hardy fellows!

Grow that fire me lads! Use your bellows

Raise it high for I’m reluctant to say

A monster, Champy at times comes this way

It crawls out from the lake that shares its name

It crashes through forests looking for flame

Then waits in the dark mimicking a trunk

Until all the drowsy campers are drunk

When the coals get low it makes its attack

To return all the forests unto the black

Crash! Smash! Boom!

For those that are brave and wander at night

Alone and meandering away from the light

If you hear something sobbing O so near

Still yourselves and keep watch, allay your fear

For the Squonk may be found by its weeping

Its your loss that always brings it creeping

So keep all your maudlin tales locked away

Or dissolve in tears like mists of the bay

I thought I heard wailing or such at when

You spoke of some love or what might have been

Moan! Hiss! Poof!

But worry not my spirited lovelies

I’ve an eye and ear for these things you sees

Just leave me some grub, a bottle of cheer

And I’ll stand guard over all you hold dear

And a little something to smoke methinks

A small price to pay for them forty winks
