2RO064 - Art Selector

We considered several designs for our Selector. Some of the questions we discussed:

  • How large does a thumbnail need to be?

  • What’s the best way to list portrait and landscape images together?

  • How do we show the transition between thumbnail list and wall of framed artwork?

In the Cyborg spirit, bridging the physical and digital is very important to us; it was an early motivator for developing Rookery. We want to create a virtual space that blends the best parts of both a well-organized museum and a powerful database.

One of the big decisions we made during this Sprint is to go with square thumbnails in the Selector, and framed artwork in the Rooms. We went with square thumbnails, because it gives the user an opportunity to bond with each work of art, and select a detail they think best represents it. And we went with framed artwork, because it’s a more realistic representation of how that object actually exists in the world.
